Hada Labo Shirojyun Arbutin Whitening Cream – Review

Here is another review of a moisturiser from the Hada Labo family.

The main active ingredient of this moisturiser is arbutin, which is known for diminishing hyperpigmentation and overall brightening the skin tone. There’s also a vitamin C derivative in the form of magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, which shares similar functions to arbutin. As in all Hada Labo moisturisers, there is a bunch of moisturising ingredients like glycerine, hyaluronic acid, squalane, and meadowfoam oil. The formula does not include fragrance and dyes.

This product is targeted at people who want to fight dark spots and lighten up their skin tone, more precisely, people struggling with hyperpigmentation and sun damage. Given that the main two ingredients are arbutin and magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, this moisturiser has some potential to aid these two problems. In my experience, this cream has brightened my complexion, including hyperpigmentation from blemishes. Also, it has helped to lighten the back of my neck, which got some tan during the summer. I would say you need to use more than one jar, to noticeably brighten the skin. The results don’t come instantly, as it takes a couple of weeks to see the first changes.

Texture-wise it’s lush and bouncy gel, a bit similar to the Hada Labo Tokyo Plumping Gel, but this one has a slightly lighter feeling. You can also sense a bit of oiliness from the squalane and meadowfoam oil. Similarly to other Hada Labo products, this cream is intensely hydrating, it leaves you with a supple and radiant complexion. I’ve most enjoyed using the gel as a sleeping pack. If I used it during the daytime, I had to make sure to powder or blot my T-zone, as the cream always made my T-zone oilier (it happens to me with all products that contain squalane).

I highly recommend this product to everyone; it brings the promised results. In my opinion, this product is suitable for all skin types, but people with very oily skin or acne-prone skin may find it a bit too heavy (it doesn’t clog pores or cause breakouts, though). Rohto’s moisturisers from the Hada Labo brand are always fantastic, and this is one more product that I can add to my favourites. I am sure that everyone can benefit from this product, especially if you want to brighten up your skin tone and hyperpigmentation. For more robust action, pair this product with a good exfoliating treatment that includes either azelaic acid or glycolic acid as well as a serum with ascorbic acid or niacinamide. And naturally, as always don’t forget to use a sunscreen.
