La Roche-Posay Toleriane Sensitive Prebiotic Moisturiser – Review

The entire Toleriane range is amazing; they are one of the best products for sensitive on the market. This moisturiser is a new addition to the Toleriane range and a pretty good one.

This product was developed with the idea of healing a compromised skin. It’s meant to soothe, protect, and repair the skin barrier. The cream contains ingredients such as glycerine, niacinamide, ceramide NP. There’s also a prebiotic claim, as the name indicates, but LRP don’t mention which ingredient that is. So where are prebiotics?
Well, if we look at the American equivalent of this moisturiser (TOLERIANE DOUBLE REPAIR FACE MOISTURIZER), it is clearly stated on LRP’s website that the cream contains ‘La Roche-Posay Prebiotic Water’. It is the same water that LRP sell in huge spray bottles,  from the same source around La Roche-Posay (a town in France). A new product, but the same old tale as always with French pharmacy brands – their thermal waters can do anything. And what are prebiotics? They aren’t probiotics, but they are alike. Prebiotics are elements found in plant foods. They are fermented in our bodies and help to produce beneficial microorganisms. Probiotics, instead, are a product of fermentation in foods. I am not sure how useful prebiotics are in skincare, and LRP didn’t bother to explain… I assume they have a similar effect to probiotics.
Another interesting thing is that the UK version contains squalane, and the version for continental Europe doesn’t. The UK version also doesn’t have any claims about prebiotics, but the product still contains the same water from La Roche-Posay. I don’t know why LRP played with the formulas, but I don’t mind not having squalane, as it makes my T-zone quite oily.

Lastly, the cream is fragrance-& alcohol-free, non-comedogenic, and perfect for sensitive skin types, even babies. Just like with the entire Toleriane range, don’t underestimate the short and simple ingredients lists, all of the products are brilliant.

When I first tested the product, the cream seemed a bit too light for me. I bought it in December, and I thought that it wouldn’t be enough for the winter. As its consistency seemed somewhat watery, it’s lighter than CeraVe Moisturising cream/PM Lotion. Surprisingly, it was very hydrating. I used it for the first time before the bed, and I didn’t apply anything else; I just sprayed my face with Serozinc and then used this cream. I’d thought that I would wake up with dry patched the next morning, but I did not. I mean even people with dry skin will like it. My skin was hydrated, and overall it looked calmed down. It made my complexion look soothed, and the skin-tone was even. You know like after the entire day your skin looks pinkish and irritated after a long day. This cream calmed my skin and made it appear what I would call refreshed.

The cream contains niacinamide and ceramide, which are great at strengthening and restoring the skin barrier. Niacinamide is also great for hyperpigmentation and helps with signs of ageing. This product can be used as a family moisturiser because everyone can use it from babies to people needing some extra care in their skincare. I also like to use it around my eyes, because it’s light and soaks in pretty nicely and I find it quite soothing for the redness that appears in the corners on my upper eyelids during the winter. However, I don’t like using it during the day on my entire face, because it makes my T-zone shiny, not greasy, it doesn’t exacerbate the oil production, but it just appears shiny when I apply this moisturiser. Not in a very disturbing way, it is a normal level of shine, but I would rather not have that. So if you have oily skin, please bear it in mind.

This moisturiser is great for everyone – dry, sensitive, normal, and oily skin types. You don’t have to have sensitive skin to use it. The product was made to suit all skin types. If you have oily skin, you may prefer it as a nighttime moisturiser, as I do. But still it’s a great product, and I would recommend it to everyone. It’s simple, no irritating ingredients, and it won’t do damage to your skin (of course if you can tolerate the ingredients).
